DACOMAT - Damage Controlled Composite Materials

The objective of DACOMAT is to develop more damage tolerant and damage predictable low cost composite materials in particular aimed for used in large load carrying constructions like bridges, buildings, wind-turbine blades and offshore structures. The developed materials and condition monitoring solutions will provide high tolerance for manufacturing imperfections and high capacity to sustain damages. This will enable large composite structures to be manufactured and maintained at low cost.

With new composite materials developed in the project, our aim is to:

  • Improve durability and reduce lifetime costs of bridges with 30 %
  • Improve durability of wind turbine blades by 30 %, and achieve a significant reduction of blade related cost (offshore)

Weakening composite materials to make them tougher

A short summary of Daan Jonas Hottentot Cederløf's thesis "Enhanced damage tolerance of composite materials by multiple delaminations". The DACOMAT project aims to control damage formation and growth in large composite structures. This work directly contributes to both aspects: by material treatment we can control where the damage initiates; by forming multiple delaminations we can increase the laminate’s overall resistance to damage growth.
